Breast Surgery - Augmentation

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) is the surgical enlargement to the breasts with implants. It is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures nationwide and it can be performed on women of any age. Prior to surgery a mammogram is required.

Breast enlargement may improve self-image, boost confidence and create greater personal comfort in clothing and swimwear. It can create fullness which was never present or restore fullness lost following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. The patient is usually able to return to work in less than a week. The procedure may be combined with a mastopexy (breast lift), if needed, to maximize the improvement of breast contour.

Breast augmentation involves making a small incision to insert a breast implant in order to enlarge the breast. The surgery is performed while the patient is asleep under a general anesthesia in the safety and comfort of our outpatient operating room. Gel filled breast prosthesis are available again to all patients as of November of 2006.  Dr. Dawkins was part of the national gel filled implant study from 1992-2009 and the post market study from 2007-2008.  He has more than 30 years of experience using both saline and gel filled breast implants.  For the woman with very little breast tissue the gel filled prosthesis provides a superior result.  The gel used is more cohesive than earlier gel implants and provides a more natural feel and there is less wrinkling.  Since 2006 more than 80% of our patients have chosen gel filled prosthesis, but it is YOUR decision.

If you have a saline filled prosthesis in place and are concerned with the wrinkling or the feel of the prosthesis, it can be replaced with a gel filled prosthesis of the same or a different size.
